Homes at Paradise Estates provide the perfect setting for in-house holiday entertainment – which include sweeping views of Okanagan lake, an open plan gourmet kitchen, private elevator, gas fire place, roof top patio, wireless sound system, and of course, a temperature controlled personal wine cellar.

When it comes to the holiday season, it’s important to have some holiday favourites and necessities on standby to pair with any holiday dish or appetizer.

From Aperatif all the way to Digestif – here are some of my favourite fun yet classy holiday wine and food pairing recommendations.

Aperatif’s are drinks meant to be taken before a large meal.  They help wake up the senses and palate and prepare the guests digestive system for the culinary journey ahead.

On arrival

Upon the arrival of your guests, pop a bottle of La Marca Prosecco as an aperitif and give everyone a glass. This tactic keeps visitors from being empty handed at the start of the party and saves you, the host time from pouring different drinks from the get-go.  Bubbles on arrival give an immediate impression of a fun, warm and welcoming home.

Keep the bubbles flowing with a Brut (dry) bubbly.  This is a fairly versatile choice that can go with just about any food group!  I recommend a bottle of Blue Mountain Bubbly with fresh oysters or crab cakes.  Blue Mountain Blanc de Blancs, Reserve Brut or Brut Rosé are all wonderful options.

Main Course

It’s not too late to pick up and enjoy a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau (be sure to drink it before ringing in the New Year)!  This wine will pair perfectly with your turkey dinner.  Beaujolais Nouveau is a light bodied, fruity and juicy wine that will surely please dinner guests.

Roast Beef

Not crazy about turkey?  Roast beef and Cabernet Franc are a winning pair!  I suggest Le Vieux Pin’s 2012 Équinaxe Cabernet Franc alongside your roast.

Roast Ham

Roast ham is a classic holiday choice at the dinner table.  Pair it with a bottle of beautiful, bold and elegant Amarone from Italy.  I suggest the Masi Costasera Amarone Clasico.

Mushroom Risotto

Vegetarians in the group?  No problem.  Whip up a gorgeous, creamy mushroom risotto and pair it with a beautiful Burgundian Pinot Noir.  A bottle of Louis Jadot Bourgogne is fairly easy to source in the Okanagan and will ingeniously complement the dish.

Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin pie is a pretty standard dessert option around the holiday season.  Bring a touch of Hungary to the table and pair a luscious bottle of luscious Tokaji Aszú with your pie.  The combination of both sweet and sweet is pure magic (you can take my word for it).

Chocolate Board

Port and chocolate are a winning combination.  Put together a variety of chocolates and serve them on a board alongside a glass of Taylors 10 year old tawny port.

After a large dinner, serving a digestif often does the trick for full tummies and tired souls.  Digestif’s generally have a higher alcohol content, but offer a relaxing, rich profile for those already content guests.

Irish Coffee

Keep it classic and serve guests a delicious hot coffee with a tot of Jameson’s whiskey.  Top it off with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Eau de vie – Calvados

Another delicious digestif idea is Calvados.  Named after part of the Southern Normandy region of France, this apple brandy tastes like distilled cider and is wonderful on a cold evening.  I recommend the Coquerel VSOP - a nice light bodied, floral calvados with big flavours of green apples; a great introduction to the category. It also mixes really well with apple cider and can be served either hot or cold.

Or just take it easy!

Don’t feel like cooking a luxurious 5 course meal?  Burnt the turkey?  Why not become the world’s most chilled out super host and order some Chinese take-out?  It will pair perfectly with a local bottle of Volcanic Hills Gewürztraminer.
